What is the difference between a walk-in shower and a level access shower?

This is a question we get asked a lot in a roundabout way here at Age Care Bathrooms. The answer is that both can be great in different situations! We’ve had many enquiries from people who approach us saying that they need a level access shower, but after hearing their requirements we think that a walk-in shower would suit their needs far better. We want to make sure that people understand the difference between the two as well as the advantages they can give you.

To know which type of mobility shower you need, you need to understand the difference between the two! The primary difference between a walk-in shower and a level access shower is the tray underneath. A walk-in shower uses a tray to catch the water, whereas a level access shower has no tray or lip.

Level access showers are also known as wet rooms. There is a common misconception that people don’t want to have a wet room in their house, but rather a level access shower where in actual fact, they are one and the same!

What are the advantages of a walk-in shower?

There are a lot of advantages when it comes to both shower choices:
Cosmetic – From a decorative perspective, we are all used to seeing showers that have trays to catch the water and drain it away. They also can offer less distraction to the room
Enclosed – There are many people who like the fact that the shower is very much enclosed off and defined within its own space.

What are the advantages of a level access shower?

Useful for small bathrooms – a level access shower opens up the scope for small bathrooms. By utilising something as simple as a manoeuvrable shower pane, you have the ability to create space where it’s necessary within the bathroom!
Wheelchair and mobility chair accessible – if you are a wheelchair or mobility chair user, then a level access shower means you can wheel right in. There’s no lip or tray to contend with and there’s no need to install ramps which could potentially cause injury

Another misconception people may have about level access showers and walk-in showers is that they might clash with your current bathroom décor. Here at Age Care Bathrooms, we believe that this doesn’t have to be a hurdle as we look to create an integrated design for your bathroom.
